Introduction

Since its inception in 2017, Alo Moves has been driven by a singular mission: to inspire mindful movement and meditation. Now, by leveraging mixed reality technology and volumetric capture, we’ve helped Alo Moves take this goal to the next level.

The solution

Alo Moves XR for Meta Quest 3 breaks new ground as the first Meta Quest fitness app employing volumetric captured 3D classes. This technology provides lifelike instructors to guide users seamlessly through every movement. The app employs room mapping and object detection enabling users to practice mindfulness, relaxation, yoga, and Pilates safely and comfortably in a virtual studio.

Two featured modes are available:

  1. Mixed reality movement and mindfulness classes with 3D instructors. These classes happen within an "environmental portal" anchored within the space. The 3D instructors, including a movable "mini-instructor," enhance training with personalized visuals and guidance.

  2. An extensive library of existing 2D classes can be enjoyed including yoga, Pilates, and mindfulness content.

Partnering with Metastage, we used 106 IR cameras to capture the instructors in a 360-degree green screen volume where they could naturally perform all their movements while recording the final audio for instruction. We were able to review sample data sets from each capture during the shoot and then kick off the selected takes to process. Once LUTs were applied, we received the lightweight mp4 files, including body and facial geometry meshes and high-resolution texture files, which integrated directly into our Unity development platform. This capture technology was best suited to provide photoreal and true-to-life reproductions of the instructors including Ashley Galvin, Annie Landa, Bianca Wise, Kirat Randhawa, and Susy Markoe Schieffelin.

With the instructor fully rendered in 3D, users can easily find the right posture, body placement, and limb positioning without the limitations of traditional video capture. In the headset, the instructor's larger front-and-center volumetric capture is instanced into two other fully view-independent positions around the user. Users can pick up, rotate, and reposition these smaller instructors to best suit their eyeline and head direction. This immersive experience creates a sense of presence and connection, similar to attending an in-person class, regardless of the user's physical location.

The impact

Using Alo Moves XR on Meta Quest 3 enables a more effective workout by providing face-to-face interactions with renowned instructors in life-sized, 3D formats. Users can walk around the instructors and view each pose from any angle, offering a clear understanding of movement and posture, which enhances their learning experience.

Alo Moves XR immerses users in serene environments and minimizes distractions, facilitating a seamless transition into a deeply meditative state. Classes, ranging from five to 24 minutes and suitable for all fitness levels, cater to individual needs and time constraints, making mindfulness practice accessible to everyone.

I tried the new Alo Moves app for Meta Quest 3, and it fixes the worst thing about working out in VR…the app might be the first to totally appreciate the adaptations truly needed for mixed reality fitness.
